Is Doyle Brunson Broke?

Has Doyle Brunson gone broke?

Doyle ‘Texas Dolly’ Brunson is one of only four players ever to have won the WSOP Main Event more than once. He won the $10,000 buy-in event twice, in 1976 and again in 1977, with a final holding of ten-deuce offsuit each time. Almost 40 years later, T2o is still “the Doyle” in card rooms around the world. Ace-queen suited or offsuit is also sometimes referred to as “the Doyle” because Brunson has been clear that he dislikes AQ. He has been playing fewer tournaments lately and so perhaps that is why there has been speculation here and there that Doyle Brunson is busto.

Fifty-Year Career

Brunson’s poker career has spanned more than 50 years and his tournament winnings total more than $5.5 million. He is the author of several books, including the revolutionary poker manuals Super/System and Super/System 2. He had his own poker site, doylesroom.com, and remains one of the most important personalities in the poker industry. He went broke early on in his career, as gamblers often do, but Brunson somehow made a life out of playing poker when to do so was not such a fashionable thing.

He is still a semi-regular player, at over 80 years of age, at the $4,000/$8,000 limit game in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio and he doesn’t have any intention of stopping anytime soon. As recently as May 2013, Brunson explicitly put an end to rumors that he may be retiring when he blogged that he was “not about to quit playing poker!” He went on to say that he intended to play poker until he was no longer able to sit at the table. The statements were made to quash retirement rumors after Brunson tweeted about sitting out of WSOP tournaments.

Brunson made it clear that he’s not giving up on poker, but he will not be playing many tournaments in the future. He was a tournament winner for a long, long time. Some of his biggest cashes:
– 1st place for $1.198 million at the 2004 WPT Legends of Poker No-Limit Hold’em Championship
– 3rd place for $560,000 at the 2005 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic No-Limit Hold’em Championship
– 1st place for $367,800 in a 2005 WSOP No-Limit Hold’em Short Handed event (Doyle’s tenth WSOP bracelet)
– 1st place for $340,000 at the 1977 WSOP No-Limit Hold’em World Championship

Many of Doyle’s biggest wins, though, have come in cash games, which he says he’ll keep playing. In a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world it’s not surprising to hear rumors that Doyle Brunson is broke. He does not play many tournaments anymore but he has made notable appearances on High Stakes Poker and Pokerstars’ The Big Game and he continues to frequent the biggest cash games in Las Vegas. Texas Dolly may be slowing down, but he is not broke.
