Poker Player Profile: Barry Greenstein

Personal Life

Born in 1954, Barry Greenstein is a widely recognized poker player. He was brought up in Chicago and growing up, poker would provide him with a means to make extra earnings. After completing his high school education, he went to the University of Illinois where he earned a degree in computer science. While he was pursuing his doctorate degree later on, he got married and to better support his family, dropped the course to take a job at Symantec. He currently has six children, one of whom he runs a poker website with.

Poker Beginnings

Greenstein started playing poker as a child as his father introduced him to it when he was very young. His passion for the game advanced through high school and college and he later in 1991, decided to quit his job at Symantec to fully concentrate on the game. In playing poker, his approach has always been analytical and he maintains his poise even when he loses. For this reason, he is highly respected by other poker players.

Poker Success

Greenstein put in a lot of effort to make progress as a professional poker player, but it was not until 2003 that his efforts bore fruit. During the same year, he participated in Larry Flynt’s Poker Challenge Cup and made away with $1 million. He gave a large fraction of the amount to charity and it is as a result of this deed that he was given the nickname ‘The Robin Hood of Poker’. A year later, he scored a $296,000 prize in the $5,000 No-Limit Deuce to Seven Draw, and $44,000 in the $1,500 Limit Ace to Five Draw.

In 2005, he again got another $128,505 for taking first place in the $1500 Pot-Limit Omaha. First position in the $1,500 Seven Card Razz saw him take home $157,643 in 2008, and another 2012 triumph in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud got him $78,038. While he made his first large donation to charity in 2003, he is known to do the same with his winnings to date.

Poker Fame

Barry Greenstein is a successful poker player and while most players have been able to make a name online, he has established his place through cash games. His recent involvement in tournaments has however helped propel his recognition and philanthropy as what he makes through cash games is so much so that he donates his tournament winnings to charity.

Greenstein holds two World Poker Tour Titles and has appeared in all the first three seasons of Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament and on Poker After Dark, as well as in the seven seasons of High Stakes Poker. Apart from being a good poker player, Greenstein has a book – Ace on the River, which he gives away to those who knock him out of poker tournaments. He is also known as a good poker teacher as most of his students have become great professional poker players.
