Poker Player Profile: Chris Moneymaker

Personal Life

The American poker player, Christopher Bryan Moneymaker was born November 21, 1975 in Atlanta Georgia. He grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. Chris was, from the age of 12, encouraged to work for pocket-money. He thus mowed lawns and even flipped a couple of burgers to earn extra money. He had an aggressive personality even at a young age, as he played soccer competitively at 4 and his major sport was wrestling. He also played recreational basketball, football, golf and boxing. All his life, he gained satisfaction from his competitive spirit and drive to win at everything.

His drive however did not spread to his grades in school. He was a B student in High School and later attended the University of Tennessee where he earned a Masters Degree in Accounting. He soon worked as financial controller and plated poker for entertainment. A year after working in his new job, he won the poker tournament that would make him a legend in the poker world.

Poker Beginnings

While working as a comptroller in Nashville, Chris indulged in poker for entertainment. A year down the line, in 2003, he took part in a online poker game package for the World Series of Poker. He won two tournaments and he soon headed to Vegas. He had a good feeling that he could make better earnings there. While in Vegas, Chris made a great impression as he outdid 839 professional players from around the world. He became the World Champion at the WSOP. No one could believe that a person without much experience in poker could beat renowned professionals.

Poker Success

A year after the Main Event, Chris finished in second place at the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament, where he cashed $200,000. That same year he almost made his second World Series final table. He finished 10th in the Pot limit Omaha event worth $5,000. Chris is no stranger at the PokerStars European Poker Tour and has earned a good amount of money; he has a winning of $24,480 at 17th place in 2007. In 2008, Chris won &139,635 in the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP).

Poker Fame

Chris has made an impact in poker tournaments and will definitely go down in history. He is renowned worldwide for what the media has termed the moneymaker effect. Everyone loves the story of the man who beat hundreds of poker pros while still an amateur. The rise of an amateur to stardom and a huge cash load inspired a lot of people to begun playing in card rooms and online across the world. He is basically the man that revolutionized online gaming.

Because of his fame, he has traveled around the world on a poker tour or circuit. Other than paying attention to poker, he attends to several business interests and spends time with his family. He has also published his autobiography. He still loves to take some time to play some of the sports games he loved to play. Especially football, golf and basketball. Chris Moneymaker is actually living the dream that every poker player dreams to achieve.
