Patrik Antonius was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 13th 1980. He started off as a tennis player before he went into professional poker in the year 2002. Other than just playing tennis and poker, he is also a former tennis coach and is currently a model. He is among the younger generation of professional poker players, at 33 years of age. His nicknames include PA, Black Lotus and The Finn. Antonius is married to Maya Geller, and lives with her and their two children in Helsinki. His interests include working out and participating in different sports.
At the tender age of 12, Antonius was introduced to poker, and in time, he fell in love with the sport. However, he did not go pro until ten years later, and began to make a name for himself in 2005 during a European Poker Tour (EPT) event and a World Poker Tour (WPT) one, when he almost made it to the final table. In September of the same year, Antonius finally made it to the final table at the EPT Main Event, in Barcelona, finishing in 3rd place. The rising star was mentored by Marcel Luske, a poker professional.
Towards the end of 2005, in December, Antonius finished 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. This earned him his first major cash win of over 1 million US dollars. The following year, he finished in 9th place at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) event, taking home a cash win of 205, 920 US dollars. From then onwards, Antonius has been on a cashing streak, bringing his earnings to over 4 million US dollars.
This 33-year-old’s poker success is boosted further by his participation in high-profile online tournaments; in September 2008, he took part in the Full Tilt Poker tournament, and came in 2nd place, earning 320,000 US dollars. Under several nicknames, Antonius has continued to win cash prizes in numerous online tournaments, earning him a few extra millions. However, in recent years, he has begun to use his real name on different poker networks.
Despite not having any WPT titles or WSOP bracelets to his name, Antonius is well-known for his appearances on the third through sixth season of the High Stakes Poker show. He is known for being on the show when there was the largest pot ever, which totaled to 998,000 US dollars. Antonius is also a regular in live cash games such as the Big Game.
It is important to note that not all his fame is as a result of his winning streaks. Antonius had one major loss that was captured on an episode of Poker after Dark. He lost a pot of almost 600,000 US dollars to Tom Dwan; making it in history as the largest pot on the show. Antonius was the first player that ever went up against Dwan in his Million Dollar Challenge, but because of their busy schedules, the game was played for over two years.
However, back to his positive fame; in 2009, Antonius won 1.3 million US dollars; making it, to date, the largest pot in the history of online poker.
