Details of the Jason Mercier / Vanessa Selbst Bracelet Bet

The poker world has one topic on it’s mind this world series, and it’s the HUGE bracelet bet between Jason Mercier and Vanessa Selbst. The details surrounding this bracelet bet are incredible, and Selbst is in a bit of hot water.

Details of the bet

The details of the bracelet bet between Vanessa Selbst and Jason Mercier are pretty straight forward. Mercier bet Selbst that he will win 3 gold bracelets during the 2016 WSOP getting 180:1 odds. Mercier put up $10,000 and Selbst will lose $1.8 million if she loses. Winning 3 bracelets is incredibly hard, so to Selbst, it almost seems like free money.

Controversy surrounding Vanessa Selbst

Vanessa Selbst has come under fire for trying numerous times to back out of the bet. She allegedly tried to back out early on in the series for $1,000, and tried to buy out for $100,000 when Mercier started to perform. This is all pretty standard and wouldn’t be an issue if it wasn’t for what Selbst was claiming.

Selbst claimed on Twitter that she was intoxicated when she made the bet, trying to garner sympathy from the poker community. This backfired, and Selbst has come out not looking great at all. Here are her tweets referencing the bets:

Selbst resorted to asking the Twitter community to help her buy out of her bet.

Jason Mercier was quick to defend the bet, and call out Selbst for not being as drunk as she is making out.

Vanessa Selbst has a history of making huge bracelet bets, and she hasn’t been successful in the past. This bet with Dzmitry Urbanovich cost her $2 million when she gave him 200:1 odds.

Jason Mercier’s progress so far

Incredibly, before reaching the half way point of the 2016 WSOP, Mercier has collected two bracelets. His incredible run also included a 2nd place finish in the $10,000 Razz event. He came into the heads-up battle with a huge chip lead. It doesn’t stop there either. Mercier made another final table, but was unable to capitalize and finished in 8th place. The sweat is real for Selbst!

Mercier has plenty of events still to come, including some high roller events which generally have very small fields. Mercier must feel extremely confident of picking up a 3rd. Mercier is only out $10,000 if he loses, so the sweat is completely on Selbst.

How likely is this bet to come through?

Given Mercier’s incredible run so far, it’s hard to see him missing out. Of course, a single bracelet is an amazing achievement, so it won’t be a walk in the park. Given how many events are left, Mercier must feel very confident and confidence is a key in keeping a solid mindset.

The WSOP (Vegas) has only had someone win 3 bracelets 5 times previously.
