PokerStars have announced that the win the button tournament type will become a permanent fixture on the site.
This is a very popular decision as the strategy behind winning win the button tournaments is vastly different than standard No Limit Hold’em tournaments.
The win the button tournament structure is pretty simple to understand – win a hand and you will get the button for the following hand. This promostes aggressive play as it is a huge advantage to play from the button in a No Limit Hold’em tournament.
In a tournament type which promotes stealing the button as much as possible, winning the button then picking up AA is a huge advantage. Players won’t suspect that you are so strong and think you are stealing.
This type also promotes making strong plays on a regular basis when you have a strong player on your right. These strong players will win the button more and more meaning you will be playing out of position too much and even paying more blinds than anyone else at the table.
