Johnny Chan is an American professional poker player. He was born in Guangzhou, China but was brought up in Arizona, Phoenix and Houston, Texas. He enrolled in university to pursue a degree in the hospitality industry since his family owned several restaurants. However, he never got to finish his degree after visiting Las Vegas. He decided to focus on a career in poker.
Johnny began to consistently win in poker events in 1982. Chan was nicknamed “The Orient Express” by Bob Stupak after he watched him eliminate 13 out of 16 opponents in less than two hours and finally winning the tournament. After this tournament, Chan started winning consistently in poker champions.
He is one of the most famous poker players who have won 10 World Series of Poker bracelets. Only one poker player has 11 bracelets. Additionally, he is the first Asian poker player to achieve such success at poker tables in the US, and his success drove a lot of other Asians to poker tables. There are very few poker players who have won in back to back WSOP Main Events, and its considered almost impossible to win nowadays.

Johnny Chan has been extremely successful in the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, where he took second place in February of 2005, then went ahead to win the Superstars Invitational 2 during summer 2005 for the $400,000 first price. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2005. He has also done very well in NBCs “Poker After Dark” where he has been featured six times. This tournament features a take all prize pool for the winner and he has won four separate times, the most that a player has ever won. His career tournament winnings are estimated to be over $7,000,000.
Apart from making his money through playing poker, he has written poker articles for major magazines, for instance, the Card Player Magazine. Chan also owns a fast food restaurant chain in Las Vegas Stratosphere Hotel. He has also been featured in the movie Rounders, which has scenes from the 1988 Main Event. These days, he mostly focuses on poker related businesses and does consulting work and has affiliations with some casinos.
