Has Gavin Griffin gone broke?

Born in the small town of Darien, Illinios, USA, Gavin Griffin rose to become one of the most famous names in the world of poker. He won his first bracelet at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the year 2004. Despite the amazing achievement, Gavin kept a cool head and stayed realistic about life.

At the time of this win, Gavin was the youngest player to ever get this achievement and in this way, he set a record. In March 2007, Gavin once again proved his high levels of skill in poker. He won the title at the European Poker Tour’s No Limit Hold’em (EPT) competition in Monte Carlo. He beat over 700 other poker players in the event to emerge top of the list. In achieving first place, Gavin won a total of $2,391,895.

In January of 2008, Gavin paired his queen heads-up on the turn against his opponent David Tran. This move saw him win the World Poker Tour Borgata (WPT) Open event. This made Gavin the first professional poker player to win events in the WSOP, WPT and EPT and therefore achieve a Triple Crown.

This was the second world record set by the young Gavin. Despite some players achieving this record after him with staggering successes, Gavin Griffin is still a player worth some respect in the game of poker.

A Child Prodigy

In his days as a child in Darien, Gavin had his sights set on physical games such as baseball and not on table games such as poker. Possessing raw talent, Gavin competed favorably for various teams until he earned quite a number of college scholarships. He was quite realistic about his ability in sports.

Due to this, he concluded that he actually could make a substantial living playing in the baseball minor leagues. However, he did not have confidence in making it all the way to the major league baseball. Thus, he quit and took up training in speech therapy at the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

While relaxing at a college friend’s place, Gavin discovered poker. The stakes in these home games were really small. Despite the determination to win, Gavin lost some of these games. He vowed to learn more about it and spent hours reading through poker books and the Internet for more information about this game.

He got a job as a poker dealer in a private poker club. In this position, he proceeded to improve his skills. In the year 2003, Gavin Griffin went professional in the world of poker. He spent time in poker rooms hosted online and eventually plunged into the biggest stage, the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

Health problems

The world saw, admired and respected Gavin Griffin’s poker skills. However, only those close to him knew that his girlfriend was dealing with breast cancer. Gavin supported her until she finally beat the cancer.

To celebrate her win, Gavin put in place a plan where he would donate some of his winnings to fund cancer research for the benefit of the less fortunate. He became so dedicated to the cause that he wore pink hair at the EPT in Monte Carlo. This was to highlight awareness of breast cancer. Alongside his now wife Amy, Gavin continues to support cancer research.
