Has Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan gone broke?

Tom Dwan, perhaps better known by his long-time screen name durrrr, is one of the most successful cash game poker players of all time. He is known primarily as a cash game player, and so maybe it’s not surprising that he’s never booked a major tournament win.

He’s been close a few times, including a runner-up finish in a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event worth $381,885 at the 2010 WSOP, but he doesn’t play many tournaments anymore. He’s only cashed in 2 major tournaments since the 2011 WSOP; a min-cash (worth the buy-in exactly) at the 2013 NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship, and his biggest tournament cash ever, a sixth place finish at the 2014 Aussie Millions $250,000 LK Boutique Challenge worth $447,359 (but less than $200k profit). His live career tournament earnings total $2,146,161.

Perhaps it’s because he so rarely appears on the tournament circuit that the question so often comes up: Is Tom Dwan bust? Can he no longer afford to play the big tournaments?

Evidence to the contrary

It’s possible that durrrr can’t afford the buy-ins anymore, but there is ample evidence to the contrary. For example, it is well known that Dwan frequently plays in the biggest poker games in the world in Macau, which is a Special Administrative Region of China.

Rumors and reports of variable credibility leak out from time to time that Dwan has won an enormous pot, like a $3.8 million pot in 2012 or an $11.5 million pot in 2011, or endured a $2 million loss in 2013. In any event, it’s difficult to keep track of Dwan’s bankroll now that he only plays the biggest live games in the world.

It used to be very easy to keep track of his bankroll. There was a time when Dwan played almost exclusively online, as durrrr on a few different sites but most prominently on Full Tilt Poker. Because he was such a high volume online player, there are fairly precise records of his biggest wins and losses, if not his overall performance, up until as late as 2009.

In 2007, for example, Dwan earned $312,800 playing primarily no-limit hold’em on Full Tilt Poker. In 2008, he earned $5.41 million on the site. He regularly won and lost $500,000 pots on Full Tilt Poker in 2008 and 2009. And he also earned an undisclosed amount of money via his association with Full Tilt Poker.

Not the first rumors that Tom Dwan is Broke

Tom Dwan was rumored to be broke around the 2007 WSOP, when he reported that he’d lost $2 million of his then-$3 million bankroll over the course of the prior four months. He somehow survived that downswing though and it seems he did very well during the internet poker era. ‘durrrr’ has been more difficult to keep track of since he moved over to the live games, but it seems very unlikely that Tom Dwan is broke.

Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan’s Net Worth

It has been estimated that Tom Dwan’s net worth is $8 million. This number may surprise many given the high stake he plays, but in the poker world many of the best players have backers. Backers take a huge cut of a players winnings. Poker players generally splash a lot of cash on high depreciating items such as cars; or spend money on items such as high-price food which only detract from their net worth.

Whether this is the case or not for Tom Dwan it not known, but based on the information we do have, a net worth of $8 million is a very reasonable estimate.
